Wegmans Recalls Coffee Cake

Rochester, NY: Wegmans Food Markets Inc., has recalled store brand Wreath Kuchen cakes from all of its 71 stores because the product label didn't mention the cakes contain pecans. Consumption of the product could potentially cause life-threatening reactions in those with tree nut allergies.

About 4,400 of the 14-ounce, wreath shaped holiday-season cakes, which are topped with red and green cherries, have available for sale at Wegmans stores since Nov. 25. More than 2,000 were purchased. No injuries have been reported.

"This is only a concern for people who have an allergy to pecans," says spokeswoman Jeanne Colleluori.

The recalled products have a UPC of 77890 92163, and a "Best if Used By" date up to and including December 12. All remaining products were removed from store shelves Thursday. Consumers can return the cake to Wegmans for a full refund. For more information, call 800-934-6267, ext. 4760.

Customers with questions or concerns can call the company's consumer affairs department at 1-800-WEGMANS, ext. 4760.
